Cysts & Abscesses
Abscesses (sometimes referred to as “boils” or “carbuncles”) are pus-filled pockets just beneath the skin. These occur when the skin becomes infected with bacteria, an event that may occur due to an ingrown hair, friction or puncture wound. The abscess may start out as a painful red bump, eventually swelling and increasing in size over the course of just a few days.
Abscess Care at An Urgent Clinic Near You
If you have an abscess that requires urgent care, consider visiting the nearest walk-in clinic for medical attention. At Bayfront Health Convenient Care, providers may treat abscesses through Incision and Drainage, a brief in-office procedure in which the pus is drained from the abscess and sometimes packed with sterile gauze. Antibiotics may also be prescribed to assist your body in the healing process – especially if you have multiple or recurrent infections.
Walk-In Clinic Care for Cysts
Cysts differ from abscesses in that they are not caused by foreign bodies or bacterial infections. However, like abscesses, they can become filled with air, pus and fluids; also, some cysts have the potential to become infected. Bayfront providers may be able to drain cysts or prescribe antibiotics.
